Don't be afraid to ask questions!
We understand that you’re a writer not a printer. You may not know the terminology or questions you should ask. Call us, we’re technical people not sales people, we don’t mind discussing your project with you. We feel the more you understand about the process, the better we look. Every project is different, just a few simple questions about your work will help to determine the best direction to pursue.
The better your book looks, the better we look! 404 459.7264
Don’t assume that all book printers produce the same quality. Nothing could be further from the truth. Every company has their own process, sources of material and equipment; it makes a huge difference in how professional your finished product will look and how long it will last.
The cost of printing is based on several factors such as book size, number of pages, the quantity being printed and the state of the files being submitted.
Understanding Book Production Terms
Print On Demand ?
UV Coating vs Laminate
Binding: PUR vs Hot Melt
Considering a print on demand service? Be sure to read contracts carefully. You agree the service, will retain the majority of the sales proceeds, and you as the author will receive a royalty. You pay them twice, the upfront cost of preparation for press, and a large percentage of each book sold.
Although there may be many promises, marketing a book is about knowing your intended audience. If your book is about mountain climbing or over- coming a life struggle, do you think they can really reach your group better than you can? In an interview, Lulu founder, Bob Young, admits that the average Lulu “print run” is less than 2 copies.
When you skip the middle man and go to directly to a wholesale printer, you control every aspect of the process, how much your book will cost, cover art and the number of books you print. You pay wholesale prices, maintain complete ownership and keep all sales proceeds.
Know the difference! As a printer there are many ways to cut corners, one is by using a laminating machine instead of UV coating. While the technology of using laminating for book covers is getting better it has never been the choice of major publishers. And is a fairly clear indication of a self published book.
Because film Laminates are less expensive, they're frequently used by smaller printers instead of UV coating. While this could lower your cost 10 – 20 cents per book, some customers have complained that covers tend to curl and the overall look and feel is somewhat different than paperbacks produced by traditional publishers.
This should not be a problem if you’re simply distributing among family and friends but if
you are looking to appear as a book store equivalent you’ll want to go with
the standard of UV coating.
UV coating is the industry standard for professionally printed book covers.
. . . always ask, is it PUR Binding?
The worst and most embarrassing thing that can happen to an author is for pages to fall out of your book. Book binding can be an expensive process and it's easy for printers to be tempted to cut corners. For paperback binding we use only (PUR) polyurethane reactive bonding agents.
While the cost of Hotmelt binding equipment may be much cheaper, many customers have complained of spine wrinkling and even occasionally page fall out. We feel the slightly higher production cost of PUR is more than justified. We can sleep at night, knowing that our customers will be satisfied and even proud of the end product that they receive. We know that it's important to you that your readers have a good experience.
In order to look like a professionally published book, it should be produced with some of the same equipment that major publishers use.
It’s important that your book is well put together, crisp corners, hinge scored, PUR bound and flush trimmed. If your book doesn’t look good on the outside, readers will assume that the quality of the writing is also sub-par. When you have a professional looking book you are more likely to be respected by retailers and well-regarded by your readers.
